For centuries psychologists have argued over which plays the larger role in child development, heredity or environment. One of the first theories was proposed in the seventeenth century by the British philosopher John Locke. Locke believed that a child was born with an empty mind, tabula rasa (meaning blank slate) and that everything the child learns comes from experience, nothing is established beforehand. Years later, Charles Darwin brought forth his theory of evolution, which led to a return of the hereditarian viewpoint. With the twentieth century, however, came the rise of behaviorism. Behaviorists, like John B. Watson and B. F. Skinner, argued that a child can be made into any kind of person, regardless of their heredity. Her book is backed by some 750 references, but most of her conclusions come from the observation of he r own two daughters; one her own and one adopted (Begley, p. 53). The DNA structure of a human, the genes, determines the height a person will reach, whether an individuals eyes will be green or brown, and if a persons hair will be straight or curly (Saplosky, p.44). Research has also found that genes are 30 to 70 percent responsible for personality traits such as aggression, passion, shyness and intelligence. The other 30 to 70 percent of a persons personality develop from the environment (Pool, p. 52). Genes, however, are not what produces a behavior, an emotion, or even a thought. Instead, genes produce a protein that contains hormones, which carry messages between cells, and neurotransmitters that carry messages between nerve cells. Romeo and Juliet Analysis of Act 3 Scene 5 Essay In Act 3, Scene 5 Juliet’s love for Romeo is potent to the degree that she opposes and defies her father when she states ‘Not proud, you have; but thankful†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Women had the ability to refuse marriage that was commonly arranged in the Elizabethan Era, however, they would be disowned by their families. It is at the end of the scene; Juliet becomes aware that she is a woman in a male-dominated world. She proclaims, â€Å"If all else fail, myself have power to die. † She has recognised the little power she holds in society and that suicide would be the way of controlling her life. Following this defiance Capulet becomes ireful, saying, â€Å"Proud me no prouds†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This is a pun he has utilised inventively by incorporating ‘proud’ as both a verb and a noun, conveying the message that he does not want to be told this and that Juliet is ungrateful of him. The repetition of the word also reinforces the point he is making. Lady Capulet initially appears concerned for Juliet but after she defies her father she seldom speaks because of what can be interpreted as fright. At first she seems concerned for her daughter, but when Juliet defies her, she passes the problem on to her husband. She does not know how to interact with Juliet. Furthermore, Capulet uses many pejorative Elizabethan terms such as ‘green-sickness’ which suggests he was implying Juliet was anaemic; it was believed in the Elizabethan era that it was only young women who were at puberty who were afflicted by the illness. Therefore, he is insulting her by demoting her to a child, claiming she is imprudent and weak although he is instructing her to marry Paris; an act of an adult. His insults reveal the extent to which his confidence in her has been degraded. Moreover, Capulet also makes himself clear through the device of antithesis. For example, he states, â€Å"Unworthy as she is†¦. † Which is followed by, â€Å"So worthy a gentleman to be her bridegroom†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This adds a tone of aggression and poise whilst showing is status in society and the household. Capulet also states that Juliet is ‘a whining mammet. ’ He is saying that she is incompetent of thinking for herself and that she is subordinate because a ‘mammet’ or a puppet does not work itself and has to be controlled by somebody in order for it to work. This is also highlighted several times again including when Capulet says, â€Å"I’ll give you to my friend†¦Ã¢â‚¬  His daughter is only an item to him which is proved through his objectification of â€Å"give. † He thinks of her as a commodity that he can give away to boost his social status and career. Capulet’s use of the phrase â€Å"chop-logic,† meaning deceptive argumentation which is logical only in appearance, is a reference to sophism; he could see that she was well-reasoned but in truth actually fallacious and insincere. Juliet says, â€Å"Not proud you have but thankful that you have†¦Ã¢â‚¬  She uses complicated sentence constructions in order to intimidate her father into agreement out of fear that she will be made to marry Paris. When Capulet exits his power is emphasised; he decides what happened and the women of the household have no further power. In Luhrmann’s version of Romeo and Juliet, Capulet acts aggressively and only appears threatening as there is no physical action involved unlike in Zeffirelli’s. This because the director wanted to appeal and identify with the audience or Generation X who is not familiar with this kind of abuse. However, in Zeffirelli’s he hits many of the characters to the surprise of the audience which is how women of the Elizabethan era would have been treated to the audience’s surprise. Teamwork has always come easily to me because the people around me typically decide to appoint me the leader. However, my life changed the summer of my sophomore year, and this facade became skewed as I got acquainted with the real world of teamwork amidst another alpha male complex as strong and demanding as my own. The summer of my sophomore year, I attended a robotics camp that the University of Texas at Arlington hosted because of my interest in engineering. The camp challenged us by presenting us with the task of building and coding a robot that could successfully move independently, pick up cargo, and move it to a safe area. I still remember the cold, awkward stares as I entered the room on the first day. Besides the name tags that we were forced to wear, I felt naked. Vulnerable. The awkward tension settled over the room after the first forty-five minutes or so, but there would never be any consolation for those first few moments of â€Å"Hi, I’m. Rishi and I decided that boundaries come with this division of work, and we agreed to allow the other to do their job.However, Rishi began to slowly overstep these boundaries, and he eventually attempted to commandeer the entire project on his own. Rishi’s attempt at a one-man mutiny set a lot of issues that he had with me on the table. He blamed me for most of our group’s shortcomings, and I did possess partial responsibility. Some problems stemmed from my incapability to do certain things, but I always did my best to correct these. My issue lie not in the fact that I could not do certain things certain ways but rather in the deliverance of the message. Diplomacy fell into the category of things that Rishi did not care about. The transition from clandestine malcontent to egregious disrespect shocked me because of the rapid escalation of Rishi’s boldness. He went from dropping subtle hints of dislike to openly blaming my â€Å"white, suburban childhood† for my â€Å"stupendous idiocy.† This unwarranted hatred bothered and frustrated me, and it made attempting to handle the situation very difficult. The veins in my head wanted to explode. The release of my stress was impossible because Rishi r efused to see my side of things, but I tried for the sake of my own sanity. If only trying would suffice. The project failed. This experience opened my eyes to the confusing nature of the world, and I still ponder what I did to make Rishi so upset with me. Although the camp had an initial negative effect on me, it ended up changing the landscape of how I think and feel for the better. I now possess the skills necessary to handle people who have a predisposition of dislike towards me, and this skill helps me in my everyday life. I now appreciate those whom I do agree with, and I also now have a newfound patience for those whom I do not agree with because of my shelling that came from Rishi’s harsh intensity.
